FANSA WASH Network Meeting on Upcoming Sector Ministers’ Meeting (SMM) in Madrid

The WASH network, FANSA, convened a meeting under the chairpersonship of Mrs. Gulnaz to discuss the upcoming Sector Ministers’ Meeting (SMM) scheduled to be held in Madrid, Spain, from October 22–23. During the meeting, the network emphasized the significance of this global event and highlighted how Pakistan’s active participation could bring substantial benefits to the WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) and climate resilience sectors.

Global Water and Sanitation Discussions

The SMM, hosted by Sanitation and Water for All (SWA) and UNICEF, brings together ministers responsible for water, sanitation, and hygiene, alongside their counterparts in climate, environment, health, and economic sectors.

This high-level platform provides Pakistan with an opportunity to engage directly with global leaders, share national experiences, and discuss strategies to strengthen water and sanitation services.

Integration of Water, Sanitation, and Climate Action

The meeting’s theme, “Breaking Silos: Uniting Political Leadership for Integrating Water, Sanitation, and Climate Action,” aligns closely with Pakistan’s development priorities and climate vulnerabilities.

Participation in the SMM will enable Pakistan to learn from other countries’ experiences, adopt integrated approaches to water resource management, and enhance national climate resilience through coordinated policy and planning.

Networking and Collaboration Opportunities

The SMM offers Pakistan valuable networking opportunities with senior officials from the United Nations, donor agencies, and international financial institutions. These interactions can open doors to new partnerships, technical cooperation, and funding opportunities to strengthen Pakistan’s water and sanitation infrastructure.

Advocacy and Global Commitment

Through active participation, Pakistan can reaffirm its commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to clean water and sanitation (SDG 6).

The meeting’s Outcome Document and the High-Level Leaders Compact on Water Security and Resilience are expected to influence national policies, encourage greater investment, and foster stronger international cooperation in the WASH sector.

National Call to Action

The WASH network urged civil society organizations (CSOs) across Pakistan to raise their collective voice ahead of the SMM, advocating for stronger recognition that:

Water and sanitation are fundamental to climate resilience, public health, and sustainable economic growth.

Water and sanitation must be fully integrated into national climate adaptation strategies and development plans.

The network reaffirmed its commitment to amplifying these messages nationally and internationally, ensuring that the WASH agenda remains central to discussions on climate action and sustainable development.

Potential Benefits for Pakistan

Improved Water Security: Engagement in the SMM can help Pakistan address water scarcity and develop more effective, sustainable water management strategies.

Increased Funding: The meeting’s focus on sustainable financing may attract new investments and partnerships for Pakistan’s water and sanitation sector.

Enhanced Climate Resilience: Integrating water, sanitation, and climate action can enable Pakistan to better adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change on its water resources.
